Lesson 3 Cloud Resources

Cloud Computing - a term given to a network environment where computing resources (e.g. storage, compute, database, and e-mail) are physically located at a service provider's location (i.e. "in the cloud")

Types of Cloud Services:

  • Public - services that interact with publicly-accessible networks or with other public clouds
  • Private - services that only interact with members of the private cloud (e.g. devices within a company)
  • Hybrid - a collection of services, some of which interact with public cloud services and some of which interact with private cloud services
  • IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) - allow companies to rent virtualized servers that run specific applications
  • SaaS (Software as a Service) - allows companies to access software which is typically licensed by and hosted by a service provider, and made available to end users through a web browser
  • PaaS (Platform as a Service) - provides a development environment (e.g. servers and infrastructure) for application programmers
  • NaaS (Network as a Service) - makes network features (e.g. VPNs, elastic bandwidth, and Internet connectivity) available from a service provider

Example of companies:

  • AWS (amazon Web Services)
  • Google Apps for Business

Accessing Cloud Services: (How to connect enterprise to cloud provider?)

  • Internet
con: Security ?
con: QoS ?
pro: quick connection
  • Add a VPN over the Internet
  • Private WAN
MPLS
Metro Ethernet
pros: Security
pros: QoS
cons: changing cloud providers
cons: takes time to build a connection
  • Intercloud Exchange - sometimes referred to as a "cloud of clouds", an intercloud exchange lets an enterprise easily connect to different cloud providers
pros: connect only once to Intercloud Exchange Provider which connects to many Cloud Providers
pros: security
pros: QoS
cons: takes time to connect to Intercloud Exchange

Cloud Resources:

  • Virtual Services
Adaptive Security Virtual Appliance (ASAv) - a Cisco ASA that runs in a virtual machine as opposed to being a physical device; a virtual Cisco Firewall
Cloud Services Router (CSR) 1000V - a Cisco router that runs in a virtual machine, as opposed to being a physical machine - OS Cisco XE
